Comprehensive Eye Exams

A comprehensive eye exam takes between 45 and 90 minutes depending on your age, eye health, and general wellness.

We’ll begin by speaking with you about your medical history to determine if anything in your personal or family health history can put you at risk for eye problems.

Your doctor will check your eye movement for proper alignment and muscle function, as well as your side and peripheral vision for decreased sight. Next, if we determine that you need corrective lenses, your eye doctor will use a phoropter to compose a prescription for your glasses and contacts. If you need eyewear with your new prescription, you can visit our optical shops, where our opticians will help you find your next pair of frames.

What Problems are Evaluated in an Eye Exam?

In particular, our doctors will take special care to examine:

Pupil Responsiveness: It’s important for the doctor to assess how well your pupils respond to bright light.

Eye Pressure: Your intraocular eye pressure is measured to detect signs of glaucoma, a group of eye conditions that put pressure on your optic nerve. If untreated, glaucoma can threaten your longterm vision.

The Front of Your Eye: A special microscope is used to view the front part of your eye. Your doctor checks for a variety of eye health problems including cataracts, scars, or scratches on your cornea.

Your Retina: An Eye Centers of Florida eye doctor will put drops in your eyes that cause your pupils to dilate. This provides a good view of the back of your eye, allowing your doctor to examine your retina and optic nerve for signs of disease. Your eyes will be sensitive to light for a few hours after pupil dilation.
